Öğr. Gör. Dr. Murat GÜREL

He was born in the Turkish city of Elazig in 1987. At the age of 5, he was nominated as a member of the children's choir (traditional Turkish music) and a percussion instruments player of "Denizli Children, Early Music Conservatory".

Between 2000 and 2004, he took up theoretical-solfege-vocal lessons in Bursa Conservatory. In the same years, he started to take violin lessons given by the Conservatory. He became part of the Music Education Department of Bursa City's Uludag University, Faculty of Music Education in 2005.

Between the years of 2005 to 2009, while he was studying the violin (classical music), he continued to play the instrument in the traditional Turkish music style. In 2009, he started his post-graduate education in Ankara (capital city of Turkey), Gazi University, Institute of Educational Sciences, Department of Fine Arts, Music Education Branch. Here, he began to take lessons on performing analysis and theoretical traditional Turkish music. He completed his post-graduate courses with a flourish.

In 2011, he finished his post-graduate thesis that provided valuable insight into the “Preparation of Application Formats and Exercises According to These Formats in Violin Education Through Musical Ornaments Techniques in Traditional Turkish Music”.

In 2012, he started his Ph. D. education at Gazi University, Institute of Fine Arts, Turkish Music Branch. He studied on “Nubar TEKYAY” (The Best Violin Player lived in Turkey in 1905-1955 ) violin playing style within his Ph. D. education.

In 2016 he finished his Ph.D. education. His Ph.D. thesis topic was "The Analysis of Nubar Tekyay's Violin Taksims". (Nubar Tekyay's 30 taksims are transcripted and analysed in technical, melodic and theoretical terms.)

He recorded and produced an album as a violinist about "Composer Buhurizade Mustafa Itri (1640- 1712), with contributions from The Turkish Republic, Prime Ministry, Ataturk Culture, Language and History Institution, Presidency of Ataturk Cultural Center, Ankara, Turkey.

He held concerts/violin recitals in Ankara/TURKEY, Bursa/TURKEY, Istanbul/TURKEY, TURKISH REPUBLIC of NORTHERN CYPRUS, Roma-Frosinone/ITALY, Riga/LATVIA Skopje, Ohrid/MACEDONIA, Constanta-Bucharest-Braila,-Timisoara/ROMANIA, Berlin/GERMANY, Lisboa/PORTUGAL, Riga/LATVIA, Tallinn/ESTONIA, Bejing/CHINA, Shanghai/CHINA, Seoul/SOUTH KOREA.

He attended national symposiums in Turkey and international symposiums in London- Liverpool/ENGLAND, Rome/ITALY and Batumi/GEORGIA.

He participated in the "Poseidon Folk Music Festival" in Nikoleika-Athens/GREECE and "Amsterdam World Music Festival 2017" Amsterdam/HOLLAND as a soloist violinist.

He held workshop on the violin, ornamentation and theoretical traditional Turkish music in “Turkish Cultural Year in China 2013” in China Conservatory Bejing/CHINA, "Escola Superior De Musica De Lisboa" Lisboa/PORTUGAL, Eesti Muusika- ja Teatriakadeemia/Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, Tallinn/ESTONIA and The West University of Timisoara/ROMANIA.

Besides holding radio concerts with his violin on the T.R.T. (Turkish Radio and Television Association) Ankara Radio, he also gave concerts with his violin and viola students in Ankara/TURKEY.

In 2018, He prepared Primary&Secondary School's "Elective Violin Course" given authority by The Turkish Republic, The Ministry of Education, Department of Curriculum Preparing.

He is taking part as a collaborator in Workshop-Project “Beyond East and West: Developing and Documenting an Evolving Transcultural Musical Practice” in Collaboration with the European Research Council and University of Bristol-Bath Spa University (Research Partners).

Presently he is working in Turkey, Ankara,  Haci Bayram Veli University Turkish Music State Conservatory, Department of Instrument Education (Traditional Turkish Music Style Violin Playing) as a Ph. D. He lectures; Instrument Training (Undergraduate), Traditional Turkish Music Makams (Undergraduate), Turkish Music Hearing-Solfege-Writing (Undergraduate), Turkish Music Repertoire (Undergraduate), Instrument Training (Post Graduate), Comparative Traditional Turkish Music Makams (Post Graduate), Perform Analysis (Post Graduate) lessons. He does the academic study on Turkish Music Theory, Transcription and Analysis with Violin and Traditional Turkish Music Style Violin Playing.
